Do you ever get distracted while going through a Bible Study? Do you sometimes always feel you could have achieved more had it not been for the distractions? There is always something which needs our attention. Distractions are everywhere, and they have a negative impact on Bible study because they waste time. It is easy for the mind to wander during Bible study, especially if one does not know where to begin. The story of Mary and Martha is a good example of how we can be easily distracted instead of focusing on the Word of God. Many of us can relate to this story. Mary chose to give Jesus full attention while Martha was concerned with serving. Luke 10:38-42. Mary decided to focus more on Jesus than on other activities. Multi-tasking during a Bible study can be distracting. It does not work. Full attention is required in order to achieve the most during a Bible Study.

Bible reading is essential. It is the Word of God. In these times we live in, it is important to know how to study the Bible. We can learn more from the Bible if we spend more time reading it. In this post, I will share some of the tips which I find helpful during Bible reading.

Before the Study

Find a Bible reading plan

With so many books from both the Old Testament and the New Testament in the Bible, it can be overwhelming if one does not know where to begin. It is not easy to pick up one book or passage. Allow the Holy Spirit guide you on your study. Chose a Bible plan at your level and try to go through it. If you have difficulty getting started, ask someone to guide you. There is also good material you can find online.

Set aside quality time

There are many things which demand our attention, but one can set aside time for Bible study everyday. You can chose any time you feel comfortable to study the Bible. Many people find that starting the day with the Word of God is the best thing to do because it sets the tone for the day. Early in the morning, the mind is still fresh and ready for the day, and there are fewer distractions. I also find that it’s better to focus at this time. One can spend the whole day meditating on the Word. Some people may find time for Bible study during the day or at night. Choose whichever time suits you best. In these times we live in, it is good to have hope. In the Bible, one can find hope for now and for the future.

Find a quiet place

If you want to make the most of the Bible Study, find a quiet place where you will not be distracted. During breaks, if you are working, you can also do the same. Move to a place where you can read the Bible without distractions. The place should also be tidy. It is hard to focus on your study if the environment is untidy. Clear the clutter or anything that can distract you for your study. Remove your phone or turn it off so you minimize distractions from notifications.

To begin with, give yourself a shorter time frame

It is helpful to give yourself a time frame to complete your Bible reading task. Bible study is not about spending the whole day on it, otherwise you will be distracted some of the times. You will get more out of it if you focus. It is easy to complete a study within a shorter time frame.

Pray before you study

Pray before studying the Word of God. When you pray, you are allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you on your study of the Word. You will have wisdom and knowledge to understand the Bible. The Bible is different from all other books. One needs guidance from above. If you need more motivation to get started, you can listen to Christian music before your study. This can set the mood for your study and help you stay focused and not distracted.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  2 Timothy 3:16
During the study

It is important to stay focused during Bible study. Do not allow your mind to be distracted. Be in the present. Try to re-direct your thoughts if you are losing focus. You will gain more from the study if you pay more attention. If you are easily distracted and getting bored during your study, perhaps your study is not engaging. Try to find a more challenging and suitable Bible study which will keep you engaged.

Read out loud

Reading out loud allows you to focus. Your mind is fixed to the study. There is no time for distractions if your mind is focused on the study. One of the benefits of reading out loud is that it increases concentration. It is difficult to get distracted or even lose interest because the mind is fully engaged.

Take notes/Journal

There are many benefits of note taking during a Bible Study. Note taking or journaling can help you keep engaged and focused while you read. It helps you avoid distractions and drowsiness. The mind is kept actively involved throughout the whole process. I always find that going through notes in helpful and encouraging. It helps you look forward to the next Bible study.

Avoid multi-tasking

Multi-tasking during a Bible study can be distracting. It does not work during a Bible study. If you are studying the Bible, it is best to focus on that and nothing else. Your mind needs to be fully engaged on what you are studying. Do not allow your mind to think of other tasks to be done. Focus on your study first before everything else. Other tasks can wait. Like Mary, stay at the feet of Jesus. He needs your attention.

...There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her. Luke 10:42

Try to complete your study

Set goals for yourself. Try to complete your study. If you are able to complete your Bible Study, you will learn more, and also feel motivated to keep studying. You can reward yourself for every Bible study you complete.

I hope you find these Bible reading tips useful.
