Is there a way of adopting a healthy lifestyle without dieting? While I do not believe in dieting, I know some of those fad diets can work. It seems the results are not sustainable. I would prefer a complete lifestyle change to dieting. Dieting focuses on changing things temporarily. It is possible to gain back the weight after the dieting period is over. According to WebMD, "the best diet is no diet at all, but a way of life that includes food you enjoy, exercise and healthy habits." In short, one can adopt a healthy lifestyle instead of relying on diets. Dieting trends come and go, but a permanent change in lifestyle habits can go a long way in ensuring long-lasting results.

1. Drink more water

Drink water first thing in the morning. Human bodies are made up of mostly water. Water is essential. It has many uses in the body including maintaining a healthy body temperature. It also gives us energy. Start your day with warm water. You can add fresh lemon juice. Research has shown than lemon water helps flush out toxins in our bodies.

2. Eat breakfast

Eating breakfast will help you stick to healthy choices throughout the day. If you skip breakfast, chances are that you might end up making unhealthy food choices throughout the day. If you can, plan your meals so you can make conscious decisions.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are full of minerals and vitamins. They are also packed with antioxidants. Eating fruits and vegetables will also help you increase your water intake. Fruits are mainly eaten raw. Vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked minimally in order to retain vital nutrients. Shop wisely! Buy fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. Choose healthier fats

Sources of good fats include avocados, olives, nuts and seeds. Try making your own salad dressing.

5. Include whole grains, nuts and seeds

Whole grains are high in fiber, protein, vitamins as well as other minerals. Examples of whole grains include brown rice, sorghum, oatmeal, barley, millet, quinoa, bulgur, popcorn, corn and whole rye. Including whole grains in your breakfast can help you feeling fuller for longer.

Nuts and seeds contain healthy fats, protein and vitamins and minerals. Some examples of nuts are walnuts, almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts, brazil nuts, pine nuts and pecans. Research shows that nuts support good heart health. It is important to eat nuts in moderation as they contain high calories.

Some seeds contain omega 3 fatty acids and some contain omega 6 fatty acids. Examples of seeds are; sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds and psyllium seeds. Oily seeds contain antioxidants.

Both nuts and seeds can be included in your diet as they are rich in vitamins and minerals such as zinc and selenium. Nuts are a good snack.

6. Exercise

Daily exercise has many health benefits. According to Astorino, assistant professor of Kinesiology at California State University-San Marcos, “Research has shown that exercise can slow or help prevent heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis (bone loss), and loss of muscle mass.”

It is good to exercise out in nature so as to get the benefits of fresh air and sunshine. Include a variety of exercises you enjoy.

7. Rest

There are many benefits of getting a good night’s sleep which include improved immunity. According to Dr Kohler, a sleep medicine specialist at SCL Health in Montana, “Consistent sleep of seven hours a night is what’s recommended for adults just for daytime functioning – being on task, being alert for the day and being able to concentrate and not be so moody and tired during the day.” Lack of sleep can affect your overall well-being. It has been proven that burning the midnight oil is never a good idea.

“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Benjamin Franklin

Start your day on a positive note. Include your daily devotion and prayer. Meditate upon God’s word. This will help you to stay focused and positive throughout the day.
